1.

EXT. AUGUST 1903 – RATINGEN , GERMANY – CLEARING – NIGHT
Two boys watch a man Call forth a demon from out of a bonfire. Boys run away but are attacked in the woods by strange creatures; boys presumed killed.

2.

EXT. PRESENT DAY – DETROIT – HOUSE – DAY – MORNING
Alan (father) 38, Samantha “Sam” (mother) 36, Michael (son) 15, Amanda (daughter) 11, Grandfather (77), Michael's Girlfriend (15). Family moving out of their house. Movers get in truck and leave. Good-byes between Alan, Sam and Grandfather. Family gets in car. Goodbye between Michael and his girlfriend. Michael last to get in car. Family leaves. Mysterious Stranger watches from across the street (family doesn't see him though).

   
3.

EXT. PRESENT DAY – DRIVING ACROSS MICHIGAN – DAY
Alan, Sam, Michael, Amanda in car, leaving the city, talking about moving to a new house in a new small town. Everyone is excited except Michael. Talk of Sam's new job, Alan's job search, relation with grandpa strained because of grandma. Hint at last summer's incident with getting lost, show tension between Sam and Michael, etc.

   
4.

EXT. BOYNE CITY – WOULFE HOUSE – DAY
Arrival at the new house. Moving day. Michael sees strange Claw Tree, Mysterious Stranger and gets a bad headache. One of the movers gets sick. One of the movers gives Michael a cryptic warning about checking out an old copper mine in town.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – BASEMENT – DAY
Michael finds old newspaper clippings about a religious cult led by Sylvia Woulfe; daughter of the house's original owner / builder. Reads them to Amanda.

   
6.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – BASEMENT – DAY
Alan finds journal written by Dr. Woulfe (Sylvia's father) and a strange gold medallion. Alan gives Michael Dr. Woulfe's journal.

   
7.

EXT. BOYNE CITY – DAY
Michael rides his bicycle into town. Passes Avalanche Mountain . Stops to read historical marker describing history of an old, abandoned copper mine—the mine alluded to by the mover. Sheriff arrives, startles Michael, gives Michael bad vibe.

   
8.

INT. LIBRARY – DAY
Michael meets Tedric, the local librarian. Tedric provides Michael with some old newspaper clippings about the Woulfe's; hints of them being thrown out of Germany for practicing Black Magic.

   
9.

EXT. BOYNE CITY – DAY
Michael rides his bicycle home, sees Mysterious Stranger again and chases him but loses him in the town.

   
10.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – BASEMENT – DAY – EVENING
Michael finds a large number of basement floor drains. Michael feels unnaturally cold air rising from the drains. Michael tells Amanda but she doesn't feel it. Amanda plunges her hand in one of them recklessly; Michael panics (goal: show his protectiveness).

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – MICHAEL'S BEDROOM – NIGHT
Michael dreams of a Stone Circle in the woods.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – KITCHEN – DAY – MORNING
Michael tells family about his dream and about what he learned at the library about their house's first owners.

   
13.

EXT. WOODS BEHIND WOULFE HOUSE – DAY
Michael and Amanda walk through the woods behind the house and are startled by their neighbor Scott Farley who talks cryptically of something coming out of a fire. Michael and Amanda find the Stone Circle —just like Michael dreamed. Amanda acts oddly; distant, day-dreaming. Michael gets Amanda out of there and vows to find out what's going on. (Show demon first “settle” upon Amanda, then shift to Michael—set up for next scene where Michael opens the tunnel.)

   
14.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – MICHAEL'S BEDROOM – NIGHT
Michael awakens, thinks he hears his name spoken aloud then hears Amanda. Michael goes to Amanda and comforts her from a bad dream. Alan hears Michael comfort his sister.

   
15.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – KITCHEN – DAY – MORNING
Michael tells his parents about the dreams and about hearing strange noises in the house. Alan dismisses the noises as old house sounds, yet seems oddly anxious when Michael mentions the dreams.

   
16.

EXT. BOYNE CITY – HARDWARE STORE – DAY
Alan overhears locals talking about strange animal attacks against their livestock.

   
17.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – MICHAEL'S BEDROOM – DAY – AFTERNOON
Michael reads Dr. Woulfe's journal and finds entries describing use of stone circles, references to other research dating back 600 years, creation of gates to hell, and discovers there must be a second volume to the journal. Michael tells Amanda some of what he's learned; she thinks it's interesting but not that important.

   
18.

EXT. WOULFE HOUSE – CLAW TREE – DAY – AFTERNOON
Amanda goes outside to collect bugs for her collection. As she gets near the Claw Tree she experiences a strange daydream, as if the tree comes alive and begins talking to her, telling her she has an important duty to fulfill soon.

   
19.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – ATTIC / BASEMENT – DAY – MORNING
Michael searches for the second journal volume, finally finds it in the carriage house.

   
20.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – DAY
Alan and Sam talk about Michael, worried as he's been keeping to his room for several days now (since finding the second journal volume). Decide on a mini family vacation.

   
21.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – BASEMENT – MIDDLE OF NIGHT
Michael awakens to the sound of his name. As if in a trance, Michael goes into the basement. Michael speaks words in a strange, unknown language and opens a glowing blue doorway in the basement wall.

   
22.

EXT. DRIVING – INT. CAR – DAY
Family on their way for a weekend getaway to Mackinac Island.

   
23.

EXT. MACKINAC ISLAND / DRIVING / WOULFE HOUSE – DAY
Michael returns to his normal self once away from the house. Family plays tourist. Family returns home, finds Mysterious Stranger in their driveway. Michael chases him to the Stone Circle where the Stranger miraculously vanishes.

   
24.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – DAY
While family discusses whether to call the police about the Stranger, the Grandfather arrives—says he's left Grandma for good—and asks to move in for a while.

   
25.

INT. NAPLES , FLORIDA – CLASSROOM – DAY
A Teacher is conducting a summer school makeup session when he suddenly stops in the middle of his lecture and leaves the classroom.

   
26.

EXT. WOULFE HOUSE – BACKYARD – GAZEBO – DAY
Grandfather and Amanda talking. Grandfather guilty for not having spent time with his grandkids. Grandfather thinks he hears a sound in the woods. Amanda becomes strangely distant.

   
27.

INT. BOYNE CITY – LIBRARY – DAY
Michael returns to the library where Tedric has assembled information on past owners of the house consisting of a list of strange and tragic events: teenage girl suicide, boy killed by wild animals, paint artist that became obsessed with the Claw Tree, an owner that mysteriously disappeared.

   
28.

EXT. WOULFE HOUSE – CLAW TREE – DAY
Amanda leaves her grandfather after their talk. Acting oddly, she walks into the nearby field, sees Mysterious Stranger by the Claw Tree and runs back into the house as it begins to rain.

   
29.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – NIGHT
Sam awakens, feeling something is wrong. Sam finds Amanda apparently sleepwalking in the basement.

   
30.

INT. TULIA, TEXAS – MOBILE HOME – NIGHT
Woman, single mother, while cooking dinner for her two children suddenly abandons them.

   
31.

EXT. BOYNE CITY – DAY
Michael on his way to the library sees the Mysterious Stranger and chases him. Stranger stops and they talk. Stranger gives Michael a warning to tell his family to get out of the house and leave town because they're all in terrible danger.

   
32.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – KITCHEN – DAY
Michael arrives home and Sheriff is there asking the family if they know anything about the animal attacks in the area. Michael walks Sheriff out; Sheriff gives Michael a strange warning about not sticking his nose into places where it doesn't belong.

   
33.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – KITCHEN – MORNING
Michael confides in his Grandfather, gains an ally.

   
34.

EXT. WOULFE HOUSE – BACKYARD – DAY
Amanda finds the family cat beheaded.

   
35.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – EVENING
Family meeting; all except Amanda. Michael tells what he knows and suspects; but gets little belief or support from parents.

   
36.

INT. BOYNE CITY – LIBRARY – DAY
With Tedric's help, Michael and his grandfather find articles on the town's copper mine, a cave–in and miners walking off the job because of Tommyknockers. Michael asks Tedric to check into a hunch about one of the missing miners having a connection to someone pictured in a book on cults.

   
37.

EXT. BOYNE CITY – PARK / OUTSIDE OF TOWN / WOODS – DAY
Michael confronts Harvey Olds, the Mysterious Stranger. Harvey tells Michael that he and his family are in danger from a powerful demon called Teufel. Harvey explains how the cult worked: people allowed themselves to be possessed in the hope of securing guided passage to the afterlife.

   
38.

EXT. ATLANTA , GEORGIA – FREEWAY – DAY
Larry Johnston is pulled over for speeding. Without hesitation, Larry murders the police officer and continues his journey north.

   
39.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – HALLWAY – DAY – MORNING
Michael awakens and hears Amanda upset and crying. He finds Alan and Sam in the hallway trying to comfort her. Michael sees long red scratches on Amanda's legs and notices she's missing a sock.

   
40.

EXT. NEIGHBOR'S FARM – NIGHT
Several creatures hide outside a farm—adjoining property to Woulfe House. Strange creatures attack and kill several cows and then the farmer.

   
41.

EXT. BOYNE CITY – MAIN STREET – INT. SHERIFF'S CAR – NIGHT
Sheriff waiting inside his car. He watches as people arrive in town—teacher from Florida , mother from Texas , then Larry Johnston. Larry stops and discusses plans with the Sheriff.

   
42.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – AMANDA'S BEDROOM – NIGHT
Amanda awakens. She hears a voice calling her name. The voice tells her it's time to act and she agrees.

   
43.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – KITCHEN – DAY
Michael receives a call from Tedric confirming his hunch that the miners that left the copper mine then scattered across the country and started up new branches of Sylvia Woulfe's cult.

   
44.

INT. BOYNE CITY – COPPER MINE – NIGHT INTO EARLY MORNING
Michael and his grandfather slip out of the house and explore the copper mine. Michael discovers Amanda's missing sock. Pieces of the puzzle snap into place for Michael and he tells his grandfather that Teufel is after Amanda; Teufel needs a body in order to return to his full power, though he does not yet understand Teufel's ultimate goal.

   
45.

INT. BARN – DAY
Tedric tied up in a chair being interrogated by the Sheriff and Larry Johnston who ask him where the medallion is. Tedric is killed.

   
46.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – DAY
Michael and his grandfather rush home, find Amanda gone. Family searches for her in vain. Michael says Amanda has been kidnapped by the demon, Teufel.

   
47.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – DAY INTO NIGHT
Family has no luck finding Amanda. They call Sheriff who says they have to wait 24 hours before he'll do anything. Michael says they have to somehow open the tunnel in the basement again.

   
48.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – BASEMENT – EARLY MORNING
Michael finds tunnel door open and his grandfather missing. Michel enters the tunnel and doesn't see it close behind him.

   
49.

EXT. FARM – BARN – DAY
Several hundred people—new cultists from all over the country—have gathered at the farm. Sheriff and Larry discuss what to do next—find the medallion.

   
50.

INT. TUNNELS
Michael finds his grandfather in the tunnels. As they meet up, they find the skeletal remains of Sylvia Woulfe in a small chamber they believe lies beneath the Claw Tree. They hear animal snarls behind them.

   
51.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – DAY
Cultists leave the farm, surround and lay siege to Woulfe house.

   
52.

INT. TUNNELS
Michael and his grandfather are attacked by the strange creatures. Attack is repelled but the grandfather is severely wounded. Michael believes creatures are vanguard of invading force from hell, set loose by his original opening of the tunnels.

   
53.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – DAY
Alan and Sam board up windows and doors as the cultists attack in a mindless frenzy.

   
54.

INT. TUNNELS
Michael and his grandfather continue looking for Amanda. They find her at the same time as they realize they are being pursued by the creatures that attacked them earlier.

   
55.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – DAY
A slaughter is in progress as Alan and Sam repel the cultists with firearms. Cultists get smarter and get closer to getting into the house. The situation becomes desperate.

   
56.

INT. TUNNELS
Michael and his grandfather confront Teufel in possession of Amanda's body. Grandfather sacrifices himself to save Amanda. Michael and Amanda turn to escape—are blocked by creatures.

   
57.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – BASEMENT – DAY
Cultists overrun the house. Alan and Sam make a last stand in the basement. Alan and Sam, in despair, have only a few bullets left and consider using them on each other.

   
58.

INT. TUNNELS
Michael speaks words in a strange, unknown language and subdues the creatures. Michael and Amanda return to the basement.

   
59.

INT. WOULFE HOUSE – BASEMENT – DAY
Family regroups. Sam has been wounded. Sheriff, Larry and cultists break into the basement as the family escapes back through the tunnel.

   
60.

INT. TUNNELS – DEMON'S CAVERN
Michael leads his family to the cavern where Teufel now possesses the grandfather's dead body. Teufel in process of creating a gate to Hell. Family is attacked via Images that immobilize them. Harvey appears, confesses he's an angel, tells Michael that he (Michael) can defeat Teufel and close the gate, but that he'll die in the process.

   
61.

INT. TUNNELS – DEMON'S CAVERN
Michael initially rejects the plan but finally accepts as he realizes Teufel's true goal: to open the earth to all the demons of hell. Michael retrieves medallion from his father, fights and defeats the demon and closes the gate. Michael survives.

   
62.

EXT. WOULFE HOUSE – DAY – MORNING
Michael leads family out of the tunnels. House has collapsed. Tunnels collapse behind them. Family drives off into the sunrise.
